In 1993 the 4L60 was updated to add electonic controls and it was designated 4L60E. GM put the 4L60E in production during 1993 in all light-duty trucks, vans, SUVs and all rear-wheel drive passenger cars. GM redesigned the 4L60E that incorporated a 2-piece bolt on bell housing an a 6-bolt tailhousing. By 1999 all 4L60E transmissions featured this 2-piece case design. Also in 1996, General Motors changed the 3-2 solenoid to a different style making newer models not interchangeable with any previous 4L60E models. An updated version of the 4L60E was introduced in 2001, named the 4L65E. 4L65E automatic transmissions feature five-pinion planetary gears and the output shaft was strengthen to make the transmission able to withstand applications higher then 300 foot-pounds of torque on the new 6.0 Vortec engine. GM also introduced the 4L70E transmission which is a 4L65E transmission with a speed sensor located in the pump.
